Horror is a genre which is used to build suspense and fear within the audience. There are many reasons why it is important for the genre of a film to be established for example it means the target audience are able to see the type of film they are confident they would like as without genre they may go to watch a film and it turn out to be horror and they may become scared which would mean this was a waste of money. Genres are established in various ways within media and film. This is because they all follow a simple strategy , different codes, conventions and techniques which they know are successful in this film type. In terms of production, the companies may focus on producing one particular genre of film as they will already have access to lighting, props, actors, locations and many other things commonly used in that genre. This makes it easier to create the film and it also makes it easier for them to budget how much they can spend on making the film. Companies who focus on a genre also gain a good reputation from producing many films of the same genre as they are more likely to be successful. Genre is important in the opening of the film because it means that the audience can establish the genre and also know roughly what to expect. Genre is also important in the opening because it can engage the audience.
