Weekly Production log (completed with George Ring 9658)
Friday 7th November, 2014
This week, we looked at conducting our story ideas by collaborating a range of our own, choosing our favourite and putting them together. After we had our 4 favourite ideas from each of our prezi', we went to a large group of people in our target audience and got feedback on the different ideas. Using this feedback, we managed to create a story idea that we like just as much as our audience. This was helpful to us as it meant we could get new ideas and adapt the ones we already had. The next thing we are going to look is coming up with locating our story idea and developing our character types.
Friday 14th November, 2014
Last week, we looked at placing our story into a suitable location for filming and started to look at different places for our film. We contacted the local council and other places for permission to film in. The council replied saying they do not own the property and instead we should contact the owners. We also made talent release forms and location release forms, including our production company logo on top. After this, in Fridays lesson we transformed our production logo into a moving one like the Universal that features before the film. We tried keeping it simple, yet used the black and white theme to signify horror.
Friday 21st November, 2014
This week we worked individually to look at the different classifications the BBFC name there films. We also looked at creating a BBFC certificate and applied our level of knowledge to the classify our film. We both chose our own and gave our reasons and then tried to make them match. Luckily, we both chose to classify it as a 15 and from this we created a certificate for our finished film. We are now going to make our social media pages after we brainstorm title ideas for our audience to choose.
Friday 28th November, 2014
We have now come up with a range of different titles for our film and have published this on a survey website to get feedback on what we should use for our film. This included the definitions for what each of our title meant. After we brainstormed different ideas individually, we put them together and came up with 'Delusion', which won the most votes on the survey.
Friday, 5th December, 2014
After looking on different royalty free websites for horror music. We then decided to look on YouTube and came across a man who would allow us permission should we credit his work in it. Therefore, we will use some of his different soundtracks and put them in our film opening. This week we also looked at plans for shooting and began thinking of different shots to include in our animatic.
Friday 12th December, 2014
This week we decided to not do an animatic and instead start on our storyboard for a number of different reasons. It allowed us to create a more realistic version through images we could draw and we could also change different things in our story opening should we find it does not work. By the end of term, we are looking to complete our call sheets and finish our storyboard for when we film over Christmas and when we come back.
Wednesday 19th December, 2014
In our final media lesson of the year, we have completed all of the tasks on the checklist including our storyboard, adding more depth to our plans for shooting and our storyboard. This means we are now ready to start filming when we come back in the new year and potentially over the holiday depending on the weather.
Friday 9th January, 2015
Over the Christmas period, we began filming the interior shoots for our film opening with our actor Emily. Everything went to plan, and until we have finished shooting, we will start to work on the edit decision list next lesson and finish it after we have all of our footage.
Wednesday 14th January, 2015
As we were about to shoot the exterior shots for our film opening, we have had some problems with our actor and therefore have had to find a new actor. This means that the interior footage is now irrelevant, we aim to start filming for the new actor next lesson and then continue with the new edit decision list for the raw footage.
Friday 16th January, 2015
While we have waited to finish filming with our new actor, we have been selecting the music and sound effects which we aim to include in our film opening. By placing this in Premiere Pro now we will be able to see how it matches with the footage that we have collected.
Wednesday 21st January, 2015
This lesson we collected the final footage from the film opening and went through the edit decision list to decide which clips we knew for definite we would not include. Next lesson, Frankie aims to continue with the edit decision list while I finish off the remainders for the checklist and publish them to our blog.
Wednesday 28th January, 2015
We have finished the edit decision list and we are now working on the film opening by editing it in Premiere Pro. Over the next few lessons, we aim to finish our rough cut for the film opening.
Wednesday 4th February, 2015
This lesson, we finished the rough cut for our film opening and presented it to the class. We are now going to insert the sound and from our audience feedback, we are going to edit and change our film opening so that it matches with the feedback we received from the class and those on our Facebook fan pages.
Wednesday 11th February, 2015
We are coming to the end of editing our film opening. This lesson we individually went round the class and onto each others social media sites to submit written feedback in conclusion to our final film opening. We aim for this to be on YouTube in the next lesson. We will also ensure that the blogs and the Facebook page is constantly updated with information.
Wednesday 18th February, 2015
Our film opening is now complete and has been published onto YouTube. We aim to publish this on the different social media sites and gain some feedback which will help us in the evaluation part of our G321. This will start from next lesson were we recap and plan what we are going to use in our Evaluation.

Call Sheets (completed with George Ring 9658)
The following Call Sheet is a template from a music video which we have researched on the internet.
The next two call sheets are ones taken from popular TV shows 'Glee' and 'NCIS', however, they look too complex for our film opening and too use as most of the things on their is irrelevant for our film.

Importance of genre and what it means for your opening
Horror is a genre which is used to build suspense and fear within the audience. There are many reasons why it is important for the genre of a film to be established for example it means the target audience are able to see the type of film they are confident they would like as without genre they may go to watch a film and it turn out to be horror and they may become scared which would mean this was a waste of money. Genres are established in various ways within media and film. This is because they all follow a simple strategy , different codes, conventions and techniques which they know are successful in this film type. In terms of production, the companies may focus on producing one particular genre of film as they will already have access to lighting, props, actors, locations and many other things commonly used in that genre. This makes it easier to create the film and it also makes it easier for them to budget how much they can spend on making the film. Companies who focus on a genre also gain a good reputation from producing many films of the same genre as they are more likely to be successful. Genre is important in the opening of the film because it means that the audience can establish the genre and also know roughly what to expect. Genre is also important in the opening because it can engage the audience.

Primary Research for opening
Kieran Panchal
From looking at George's group's opening ideas, I believe that the narrative is very effective and as a viewer I would definitely be likely to watch it. I like this narrative because it appears to follow a character and routine that we can relate to as an audience, making it feel generally more realistic. Furthermore, in terms of production, the idea is very doable and can easily be filmed effectively with a low budget.
Grace Cambridge
I like the story idea for 'Delusion' as it is relatable and its something that we perform on a day to day basis. Therefore, by subverting the idea and making it sinister makes it interesting and different from other horror films that I have seen. I would go and see this film as it looks intriguing and the title is the one I chose in the survey as it fits the storyline.
Isaac Randall
I like the age of the protagonist as it is an age that is similar to the target audience of the film. This means that the audience can easily relate to the character and also the narrative of the opening, as it is something that the audience will be familiar with, consequently making the film scarier. The opening uses enigma code in order to grab the audience's attention and make them suspenseful of what is going to happen next.
Constructing an opening
Opening:
A young girl performs her night time routine and gets ready for bed, dressed in a nightgown; she removes her makeup and brushes her teeth. Whilst in her bathroom she washes her face and as she looks up at the mirror she sees a distorted version of herself and this suggests to us that something is out of the ordinary. She gets into bed, lies down and closes her eyes. After a few seconds she falls asleep and we have a close up on her eyes as we can see she starts to dream. There is then a series of clips showing the scenes that she is dreaming and it will be made evident that these are events that happened to her sister in the past however she is very troubled by the events.
Engaging the Audience:
Our film opening will engage the audience and entice them to continue watching the films in a number of different ways. It will be located in a realistic and relatable place as most of it will be filmed with the girl in her bathroom and bedroom, asleep. A routine that everybody does before they go to bed. However, it will take the 'norm' and subvert it by making it sinister, through the use of the mirror. This will make the film opening interesting and conform to the horror genre as it questions the audience as to what has happened in her past and she sees herself in such a way. This enigma code will entice the audience to carry on watching which is good for the film as it means good reviews. Other enigma codes will be, what is the girls story? Who is following her? Why can't she sleep? My film opening will also engage my audience as there is a crisis involved when she falls asleep, we can assume it is a dream, but is it just events from her past...
Planning for Shooting (completed with George Ring 9658)
Hair and Make Up
Our main character is a girl and is performing her bedtime routine. She will be natural and neutral make up to make her appear innocent and vulnerable which we want. This will be done by herself. There will also be a part in the flash back where she is covered in blood and looks like she has been beaten. This will be done with make up and other effects, which will be carried out by someone we know who is studying media makeup as a degree. Her costume will be ripped up clothing covered in blood, suggesting something has happened. We struggled finding images of what we want, but reading the article below we would aspire for it too look like this:
Costumes
In terms of the flashbacks, the girls clothing will be ripped up as if she has just escaped something and been in a horrific situation. At the beginning of the film opening she will be wearing a night gown, and be removing her make up, therefore in the flashbacks this will subvert what we have previously seen and shown her in a horrific light.
Lighting
As it is set at night, there will be low level soft lighting in the bathroom and in her bedroom with most of it being lamps and creating a calm atmosphere. When she goes to sleep it'll be dark other than moonlight shining on her face, this will create a spooky atmosphere on the audience as most horror films are set around the dark. Stereotypically, at night, the worst crimes happen as people are asleep, it is dark and oblivious.
Shot Types
Establishing Shot
Close Ups
Tracking Shot
Pan
Extreme Close Up
Tilt
Medium Shot
Props
In our film, we will be using day to day props such as:
A mirror - the mirror is relevance to the opening as it is the disruption of the equilibrium
Locations
We will be filming in a house using the bathroom and a bedroom. We will try to recreate the atmosphere in the lighting section above. When the flashbacks go on, it will be set in a wooded area which show they are unaware of their surrounds and conform to the fact how big the forest is, it conforms to the horror movie stereotype. We also want to film in an abandoned house as it leads the questions as to why it is abandoned.

Risk Assessment (completed with George Ring 9658)
When looking at different risk assessments, we found that many of them were for large scale productions that featured several actors. Therefore, to tailor it to our production, we changed it to include more detail about controls, property and further action. Although we understand all risks in place are serious regardless of how many people are in our production.
